Dim Ka Phe

Banawe seems to have a couple of interesting newcomers on the local food scene! I am still not over from our eventful visit at Wild Indigo Kitchen & Cafe because their food is good (and IG-worthy) and the ambiance is chill but fun. I highly recommend this place, and while I want to visit it again, otherwise there's another new food find in the area that caught my attention ever since I first spotted it on my Facebook feed -- Dim Ka Phe.

Dim Ka Phe is one of Banawe's little-known newest gems, having opened just a few months back. Getting to know about Dim Ka Phe, my first impression of this is that it was most likely a Vietnamese coffee shop. But when we got to pay a casual visit a few days ago, I found out that it was actually a Chinese restaurant.

Upon reading that, you might dismiss Dim Ka Phe as another stereotypical Chinese restaurant in this sense. But it's actually a delightful hodgepodge of a Chinese restaurant, a coffee shop and a board game cafe. In fact, its interiors were cozy, modern, maybe a bit sterile because of the white walls (except for one corner near the entrance, where it was awash with pine green colored paint). Seating was quite ample, and there was a shelf chock-full of a variety of board games to choose from.

So yes, Dim Ka Phe's appearance belies its extensive Chinese menu that you cannot tell outright that this is a Chinese restaurant (it's devoid of the usual decor and colors that you usually find in other Chinese restaurants). It had an ambiguous first impression on me but I think that's a good part of its identity. It wants to surprise customers who have no idea whether it is a coffee shop or a Chinese restaurant.

Dim Ka Phe is known for its best-sellers, their baked rice dishes.

But while we were browsing their menu, what drew us more was their wide selection of beverages -- coffee, non-coffee, green-tea based coolers, frappes and their own "Legacy Drinks." The concoction of several of their drinks was rather unusual, far removed from the usual iced coffees and frappes. That got us so excited!

It was not surprising that browsing Dim Ka Phe's menu for the drinks took us a bit long -- they were quite many and they were very, very interesting! We were utterly undecided. If only I had all the time (and the money, as well as a bottomless belly) to try them all. But as usual, yours truly is an impecunious food lover! Hehehe.

As for choosing for the comestibles, that was fairly easy -- we ordered two varieties of their best-selling baked rice dishes. Later we ordered a couple of sweets.

1) Baked rice
No wonder why it is one of Dim Ka Phe's best-sellers. It has looooooooaaaaads of cheeeeeessse!!! Their baked rice dishes will make every cheese-lover happy.

Strangely but happily, I did not find their cheesy baked rice dishes as nakakaumay, unlike, say, the cheesy baked rice dishes at Tori Chizu. Even if our stomachs, later on, came close to giving in, we still tried to get some spoonfuls kasi masarap naman talaga sila eh. But we had to have room for our three drinks and some dessert.

Pepper Beef (₱280) - "Beef slices with pepper sauce," according to the description on their menu. Happily, there were mushrooms and bell peppers too, my favorites!

Seafood White Sauce (₱280) - "Assorted seafood in white sauce." Not sure about the "assorted" thing, though. Because all I could taste was the cream dory and scrambled egg. Still, it was delicious! Pwede pala magkasama ung cream dory at cheese! I thought hindi sila bagay. I might try that at home!

2) Drinks
We ended up with having three drinks to try. Because, why not? If only we could try them all!

Dirty Matcha (hot, ₱130) - This is going to boost your morning without the jittery-inducing factor! It is rich and so milky but still maintaining the deep and delightfully bitter matcha sensation. This is perfect to partner with a light dessert.

Twilight (14 oz, ₱110) - "Burst of flavor and color from mango, blueberry and strawberry," as the menu points out. A nice refreshing drink with deep and full-bodied flavors that are a good contrast to the usually "bright" fruit beverages. It's a cocktail or a sangria without the alcohol part, but you don't mind what is missing! And it looks quite pretty too!

Honey Bee Latte (iced, ₱150) - We picked this one from their "Legacy Drinks" line. An espresso-based coffee drink with honey, milk and cinnamon. You can order it hot or iced. My food buddy chose it iced. The honey, as expected, settled at the bottom so it had to be stirred to combine all components. With the combination of floral and earthy flavors (that mostly came from the honey and cinnamon), it made the usual iced coffee extra special. With honey, this iced coffee can also provide an extra boost of energy and resistance to get you going through your downtime.

3) Desserts

Calamansi tart (₱160 per slice) - I never had calamansi tart before. This brightened my taste buds! It was sweet and tart... well, it's a "tart" tart. Refreshing, light and delicious!

Classic Cookies (₱100) - I had tried chocolate chip cookies before at that price range (or a little below it) and they were too bland, too sweet or too hard. This one wasn't! While it was bordering on the sweeter side, otherwise it wasn't too sickeningly cloying. It was dense, soft and gooey! I was happy that it was re-heated before it was served.

Dim Ka Phe doesn't have a Wi-Fi service as of the moment... but we think it is okay na rin, so that it can encourage real-life conversations... and play their board games!

We were only the two of us, so at first we had a hard time choosing a board game as most of these selections required a minimum of three players. But we finally found one -- Geek Out! It was more of a card game than a board game, actually. And although it was the first time for both us playing it, it was a blast! We ended up splitting our sides so I hoped the crew didn't mind us... as I was thinking about it, we were actually quite loud. I would like to apologize for being too embarrassing! We could not help LOL-ing... but we came to like the game so much! :)

Because of having too much fun playing this game, we didn't realize that it was raining hard outside!

The staff was nice, smiling and patient with us. Even as wanted to transfer to another table on a whim, they still assisted us in bringing our food and drinks.

Even if we tried only their baked rice dishes, that provided an auspicious prelude to the restaurant's style of cooking. We thought we could finish their baked rice -- we got to take home our leftovers instead but at least we would have something to eat at home! At ₱280 per serving, their baked rice meals are really sulit! They're indeed good for sharing.

We would have chosen their "duo" baked rice variant, but it consisted of a combination of Tomato Porkchop and Seafood White Sauce. I only wish customers can order a combination of their own choice of baked rice variants too, with this option.

When I came back to the cafe again, I tried a couple of items:

Beef Ampalaya Rice (₱170) - Dim Ka Phe has affordable rice meals such as their Beef Amapalaya Rice meal. It is a stir-fry dish with nice chunks of beef, ampalaya (bitter melon) and sliced mushrooms. This is a good dish especially to all the ampalaya lovers like me! I was happy that this dish still had some of the bitterness... and the bitter component of the ampalaya is supposed to be good. I don't understand those who try to remove the bitter flavor of the ampalaya, because what is the point of eating it if they don't taste and get the benefits of its bitterness? I'd say, they should eat other vegetables.

Wake Me Up, iced (₱150) - This is one of their most recommended beverages especially if you love coffee. And if you need a pick-me-up... or errr wake-me-up... to get you through your night shift later, this drink is guaranteed to keep you up and alert! It has a double-espresso shot, half and half (milk and cream) and the cafe's "secret ingredient," which will keep you guessing why it's so delicious.

Dim Ka Phe is a cozy Chinese restaurant, a coffee bar and a board game cafe in the Banawe area that provides a fun and chill cubbyhole from the stress and distress of every day life. Check out their vast Chinese dishes and a wide variety of beverages that will tickle your foodie fancy in no end! If you have been to this wonderful place, spread the word! It deserves to be on the radar of every foodie.

Sunflora Farm (Jala-jala, Rizal)

This blog post may not be about food, but it's still about going off the (b)eaten track, right? I know that my province, Rizal, is beautiful -- located between the lakes and the hills -- but I don't have much time nor the energy to explore it. But I am glad that I did, just recently! Sunflowers are favorite flowers of most people. They connote happiness, cheerfulness, and positivity. While I have seen a sunflower, I had never been to a real sunflower farm or garden before... right until that moment when I visited Sunflora Farm in the municipality of Jala-jala! Sunflora Farm is a nine-hectare farm that is the home of not just sunflowers, but of other flowers and plants as well, although it highlights the beauty of this popular bloom. It also has a vegetable garden, as well as a budding sanctuary for organic farm chickens. We live in the Binangonan-Angono border, so I thought that a trip to Sunflora Farm would take us a little over an hour. But we were surprised

Hatch Coffee (Baguio City)

I love to discover cafes and restaurants that are usually under the famous bloggers' and influencers' radars. It is an ultimate gratification whenever I encounter some place that I and others have never seen and heard before, much less been to. Plus, there's always a charm in discovering those relatively unknown places, which have the potential of becoming the next darling of most foodies. While Hatch Coffee has become a rising star in Baguio City, only a few outside of it has known this place, which makes it more appealing to me. As of this writing, Hatch Coffee has been open in only a few months, yet it has already drawn loyal patrons and curious vacationers alike. It is located in a residential area, so thank goodness for the signs that led to it. If it weren't for them, we would have spent longer hours going around Manzanillo village on Eastern Road looking for it. We encountered a closed black gate, surrounded by the tall shrubs and climbing vines.

Cafe Tribu (Angono, Rizal)

Cafe Tribu has gained popularity as your budget-friendly answer to those expensive international coffee chains. Nevertheless, its products are of high quality. Cafe Tribu is known for its kiosk-type coffee shops and stalls dotting several parts of the country. If I were not mistaken, Cafe Tribu opened its first branch in Angono in 2018, at its kiosk inside SM Center Angono. It soon moved to its next location across Meralco Angono, which is not too far away from SM. It has been operating there ever since. Aside from its main offering, which is coffee-based hot and cold beverages, Cafe Tribu also offers non-coffee drinks, milk teas, and fruit tea beverages. I have been buying their drinks whenever I have the chance. When Covid-19 pandemic struck, businesses and industries were affected. For entrepreneurs, the pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges and considerations. From big corporations filing bankruptcies to cottage industries closing their doors, to say that businesses are ree
