A Cup Will Melt Your Heart at Melt Kitchen

As with many other people, my food choices and eating habits are arbitrary, but there are food places that I keep coming back to.

I describe myself mostly as a budget eater. So when the menu appeals to my *pitiful* wallet, okay go!

Fast food places are a given. Other than those, I also go to food stalls and food carts.

The last two decades or so have seen the increase of food stalls and food carts in the country. You can see those food stalls and food carts everywhere -- the sidewalks along EDSA, office buildings and even some of the poshest malls in the metro.

Fortunately, people won't be bored because food stalls and food carts of today are more than just peanuts, chichiria, fish balls and sago't gulaman. Now you can find sandwiches, rice meals, pearl coolers, brewed coffee, doughnuts, burgers, fries, fresh lemon juice, smoothies, nachos and so on and so forth.

They're more than just cheap and quick tummy-fillers. Food carts and food stalls have set their feet firmly on the Filipino food culture, so to speak, and it's highly unlikely that they'll go away.

Many people have their own favorites. Mine too. Including this one, Melt Kitchen which is located across the supermarket in Mega B building in SM Megamall. I've been eating there for almost two years since I first discovered it while waiting for a friend.

All of their rice meals are topped with gravy and a blanket of cheese that's melted by a torch flame. The combination gives their meals quite a distinct taste. Seriously, I didn't think gravy and cheese are good together. I like them separately, but I doubted if they would work well as one. Until I first got to taste their Philly Cheesesteak meal and my doubts began to dissipate in the air.

Melt Kitchen offers a variety of meals:
  • Philly Cheesesteak
  • Beef Jerky
  • Beef Keema
  • Buffalo Chicken
  • Chicken Teriyaki
  • Pork Teriyaki
  • Burger Steak

As of this writing, you can choose the size of your meal - ₱59 ("Light") and ₱69 ("Hungry"). You can also order any of the three add-on's: gravy, rice and egg (surprise, I see no cheese there -- what if you want it a lot cheesier?).

Philly Cheesesteak -- an absolute favorite!
I admit that since then, it's almost always the Philly Cheesesteak that I order because it's a favorite. However, I have also tried Chicken Teriyaki (my date's favorite, by the way) and Buffalo Chicken. But it's the Philly Cheesesteak alone is the reason why I keep coming back to Melt Kitchen whenever I pass by inside Megamall.

Yep, another helping of this Philly Cheesesteak!

The combination of marinated thin strips of beef, green and red bell peppers, gravy and melted cheese -- winner! It is tasty, a bit spicy, savory and of course cheesy. It is so flavorful that you might want to order an extra cup of rice.

Buffalo Chicken
The Buffalo Chicken was interesting -- the chicken was spicy and then a bit sweet, and it was topped off with the savory gravy and cheese. At first, the combination was a bit weird to me because of the sweet factor, but after a few more spoonfuls, my taste buds were beginning to get used to its flavor. It was good, but still.... Philly Cheesesteak pa rin!

Just thinking about the Philly Cheesesteak alone is enough to make my stomach wamble. I mean, how could they come up with such interesting and yummy combination?

As for the pricing -- it is just commensurate to the servings and the flavor. The meals are not just filling but delicious too. You can order a cup of cold and sweet sago't gulaman or just a bottled water to partner your meal. And still you'll get a small change from your ₱100 bill. How nice is that?

I don't know if Melt Kitchen has other branches but I hope that they should open more. I have been partial to Philly Cheesesteak but I will try their other meals someday.

Sunflora Farm (Jala-jala, Rizal)

This blog post may not be about food, but it's still about going off the (b)eaten track, right? I know that my province, Rizal, is beautiful -- located between the lakes and the hills -- but I don't have much time nor the energy to explore it. But I am glad that I did, just recently! Sunflowers are favorite flowers of most people. They connote happiness, cheerfulness, and positivity. While I have seen a sunflower, I had never been to a real sunflower farm or garden before... right until that moment when I visited Sunflora Farm in the municipality of Jala-jala! Sunflora Farm is a nine-hectare farm that is the home of not just sunflowers, but of other flowers and plants as well, although it highlights the beauty of this popular bloom. It also has a vegetable garden, as well as a budding sanctuary for organic farm chickens. We live in the Binangonan-Angono border, so I thought that a trip to Sunflora Farm would take us a little over an hour. But we were surprised

Hatch Coffee (Baguio City)

I love to discover cafes and restaurants that are usually under the famous bloggers' and influencers' radars. It is an ultimate gratification whenever I encounter some place that I and others have never seen and heard before, much less been to. Plus, there's always a charm in discovering those relatively unknown places, which have the potential of becoming the next darling of most foodies. While Hatch Coffee has become a rising star in Baguio City, only a few outside of it has known this place, which makes it more appealing to me. As of this writing, Hatch Coffee has been open in only a few months, yet it has already drawn loyal patrons and curious vacationers alike. It is located in a residential area, so thank goodness for the signs that led to it. If it weren't for them, we would have spent longer hours going around Manzanillo village on Eastern Road looking for it. We encountered a closed black gate, surrounded by the tall shrubs and climbing vines.

Cafe Tribu (Angono, Rizal)

Cafe Tribu has gained popularity as your budget-friendly answer to those expensive international coffee chains. Nevertheless, its products are of high quality. Cafe Tribu is known for its kiosk-type coffee shops and stalls dotting several parts of the country. If I were not mistaken, Cafe Tribu opened its first branch in Angono in 2018, at its kiosk inside SM Center Angono. It soon moved to its next location across Meralco Angono, which is not too far away from SM. It has been operating there ever since. Aside from its main offering, which is coffee-based hot and cold beverages, Cafe Tribu also offers non-coffee drinks, milk teas, and fruit tea beverages. I have been buying their drinks whenever I have the chance. When Covid-19 pandemic struck, businesses and industries were affected. For entrepreneurs, the pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges and considerations. From big corporations filing bankruptcies to cottage industries closing their doors, to say that businesses are ree
